The man Daley affectionately called "Rich" was honored in a televised tribute to his time in office, during which his late wife, Maggie, revealed that Daley suffered a stroke and was hospitalized on Thanksgiving weekend. "I'm going to miss him the most," Maggie Daley said during the half-hour program. "We are hurting deeply," she said, of their son Patrick and family. The city's commish, Raymond T. Rowland, presided over the ceremony, with Daley's former aide, William J. Kelly, as a key speaker. Kelly is considered to be an heir apparent to the mayoralty, with his main challenge coming from Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd). But the evening was not without some memorable moments, including a revisit of "Meet the Daley Family," where Daley's mother-in-law, Maggie, discussed Daley's childhood. Maggie Daley recalled how her son was raised in a household of political learning, where he listened to politicians debate everything from small-town politics to international conflicts. "His father always made it clear to him, and to me, that politics was a way of life," she said. "Politics is not a dirty word," she said, adding, "I would have done it better." She also recalled her son's many mayoral victories. "He had an unbelievable memory," she said, recalling how he could talk about his strategies from a dozen years ago. "That memory was as sharp as it was positive." After the tribute, Daley's widow and son emerged from a private room and read a few final words, thanking the city for its support during their difficult time. "Thank you for your friendship and your support," she said. Daley's death came one day after longtime friend and Chicago Fire Commissioner Joseph J. Alioto announced that he was stepping down as a city alderman, adding that he would take over the position left vacant by Daley's recent retirement. Daley, 79, died Tuesday of complications from a stroke suffered three weeks earlier. 4bc0debe42
